The Nokia N8 vs Philips
The Nokia N8 mobile phone has been launched in time for Christmas and it will no doubt be occupying many Christmas stockings come Christmas Eve. The N8 is the very latest in the line of Nokia N series Smartphones and the first production models became available in October 2010.
The phone uses the tried, tested and updated Symbian operating system, the Symbian 3, which although perhaps not as trendy as the latest Android remains the industry leader. Symbian operating systems power over one third of all smart phones.
Unsurprisingly the Nokia N8 has just about everything you could wish for in a smartphone, and one way in which it surpasses the previous Nokia N series phones is the build in camera. Although the cameras built into modern phones seem to boast progressively higher numbers of megapixels, the Nokia N8 combines a 12 megapixel sensor with outstanding optics. The camera lens is manufactured by Carl Zeiss, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of advanced optical systems, and in combination with the advanced sensor provides extremely high quality images. The camera is also augmented by a xenon flash.
Naturally the video is also of very high quality. HD video is recorded at 720 p and the frame rate is 25 FPS. What is very pleasing is the way everything remains in focus. The phone focuses automatically at the hyper-focal distance in the frame which keeps everything pin sharp.
As nowadays we have come to expect from any modern phone, the display is excellent. The touchscreen is 3.5 inches with a pixel count of 360 by 640 and the phone includes support for gestures. You can plug it directly into your HDTV through an HDMI output, it includes WiFi and Dolby sound. The phone also features Bluetooth 3, the latest implementation of the technology which has connection speeds equivalent to those offered by WiFi.
Physically the Nokia N8 is a solid and robust phone with and anodised aluminium case and a scratch resistant screen, so it should survive without any problems in your pocket or your handbag.
